How Liam Hemsworth's family responded to Miley Cyrus' 'messy' breakup song Flowers

Following the release of Miley Cyrus’ Flowers, countless fan theories surfaced alleging Liam Hemsworth was the inspiration behind the self-love track.

January 12, 2024 marks one year since Miley Cyrus released Flowers, her chart-topping track that had the internet crawling the music video frame-by-frame to uncover any Easter eggs about her split from Liam Hemsworth. Although Miley, 31, never confirmed the inspiration behind the song, it didn’t stop fans from getting drunk on the theories – and the Hemsworths had a few words to say about it.

Miley Cyrus released her biggest song to date on Liam Hemsworth’s birthday

Coincidentally – or perhaps not – Flowers dropped 24 hours before Hemsworth’s birthday, but in Australian time, Liam’s native country, it was on the exact day. If you ask us, it was definitely not by chance.

From the lyrics to the music video location, fans claimed every moment was a hint to Cyrus’ failed eight-month marriage.

The lyrics: “Built a home and watched it burn” was an alleged reference to their marital home, which burnt down in November 2018’s Woolsey Fire.

Eagle-eyed fans also pointed out her subtle twerking in the video, resembling her booty-shaking moves during an event with her then-husband.

At the time, the seemingly embarrassed actor can be heard saying to Miley: “Don’t do it, don’t do it… We’re on the carpet.”

The Hannah Montana star responded: “What? Ok, we’re out.”

Liam Hemsworth’s family addresses Flowers speculation

Liam has never responded to the fan theories, but in an interview with Spanish publication Europea Press, Elsa Pataky – Chris Hemsworth‘s wife – gave her opinion on the matter.

Pataky was a fan of the song but was still cryptic. “It’s a very old topic for us. If someone should talk, it should be Liam, but I think she [Cyrus] can do what she wants,” Hola quotes.

Miley also shrugged off the speculation in her Vogue feature: “I never need to be a master at the craft of tricking an audience,” she said. “It will set itself on fire all by itself.”

Fans added to the unconfirmed feud with tweets alleging The Witcher actor was filing a lawsuit for defamation in the song. The Australian star allegedly claimed he was at risk of losing his new Netflix role, but Redditors soon debunked the rumor and the fake documents, which were created from an online template.
